At one time the Roman Empire was thriving. However, things took a turn for the worst when the Romans couldn’t protect their borders, keep an emperor, or protect themselves from the Huns invasions. The reasons listed above can prove that Rome fell at the fault of insufficient planning and leadership. Nonetheless, they may have not been the only empire to fall at its own fault.
According to The Crisis of the Third Century by William Duiker, during the third century things started to collapse for the Romans. It started with them not being able to sufficiently protect themselves. The borders were increasing at a rate that the Roman military couldn’t protect it anymore. They went through twenty-two emperors in a time period of forty-nine years. Anyone who had the strength to take over could do so by “taking out” the current emperor. According to the Third Century of the Roman Empire, following the assassination of Severus Alexander soldiers from all throughout the empire claimed fifty emperors in the same number of years. This was the ultimate power struggle. Distrust spread throughout the empire. People didn’t trust each other, the citizens didn’t trust their armies, and soldiers didn’t trust their commanders. Most of the emperors following Severus Alexander were assassinated if they weren’t killed in battle. Destroying all that got in their way. They were designed for war, they didn’t need any of the luxuries of modern life then. They didn’t do well with battle on foot. Yet, they thrived in horseback battles. The Huns were most definitely not known for their great morals either. They were known to go where they want, take what they want, and kill who they want.
