Life is an ever-evolving journey of learning. It teaches you to stand for yourself and answer what do I do in this situation or why? Here your values are your foundation, they determine your daily actions and emotions. Every day you face countless situations that help you understand what is good and what is bad or what is right and what is wrong. Life requires you to act and when you act, it reflects your values. We all are raised with identical values, but sometimes what is ethical for one might not be so for the other. Individuals perceive ethics differently.

Truthful living, equality of mankind and to help others in time of need form the basis of my religion--Sikhism. By interacting with people from different religious backgrounds in school and college, I have learned to not only respect one’s religious inclinations, but also gained an insight into how religion plays a significant role in shaping one’s ideologies. My family firmly believes in doing things deemed appropriate by society and the same values have been passed on to me. This demonstrates the deontological or means-based approach. My mother has always believed that we are praised or blamed for actions within our control, and that includes our willing, not our achieving (Kay, 1997). Her beliefs are based on the golden rule-Do unto others as you would have them do unto you and a helping hand should be readily extended to those in need. She strongly believes that there is no satisfaction greater than serving mankind. Her belief in serving the humanity has guided me in understanding the virtue-based ethics and inculcating it into my personal ethics. My mother who is part of a non-profit organization which helps empowering women in India believes that every woman should stand up for their right as no one else would do that for them. Coming from a country were women face domestic violence and are raped every day, there is a need to inculcate in yourself a desire to what you want. From education to work, I have done things which I felt was correct and important for me in the long-run. It helps in my demonstrating my egoist ethics—enlightened self-interest and a focus on what would provide the most good for me in the long-run (Gower, 2008).
