Over thirty percent of South and Southeast Asia is an area where people of the world live in. Research has been shown that the religions that started in South Asia spread throughout Southeast Asia and further. The religions mainly consist of Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Theravada Buddhism in the southern part of Asia. While learning about Hinduism, going to focus mainly on karma, samsara, moksha, dharma, vedas, and how it will affect the area of the medical field. It is referred to as the power that holds the universe and society. Dharma is believed to have the power that maintains society. Having this type of power allows it to make the grass grow or sun shine. Everyone has their own dharma, but what is for a child may not be the same for a woman or man. Having correct action shows service to humanity and most importantly God. Generally, the most important part of dharma is that developed into a class. It is the person’s responsibility pertaining to the class (varna) and stage of life (ashrama). According to the Hindu history, having the Brahmins being the highest. Brahmans, is the highest class, who perform the religious rituals. Kshatriya is the warriors who have power. Vaishya’s are the commoners that farm, trade and earn a living like ordinary people. Finally, the Shudras are the workers who serve the higher classes. “Hindus based the three top classes as ‘twice born’ mainly because they have been born from the womb and through initiation in which boys receive a sacred thread as a symbol of their high status.” Twice born were known to go through previously stages of ashramas.

Understanding that Hindus do not eat meat, are important when planning their diet. Hindus diet consist of no meat, mostly they are all vegetarians. “Hindus view the cow as a sacred animal and therefore even meat-eating Hindus will probably not eat beef. Also the pig is regarded as a scavenger and its meat is avoided.” Fasting comes around at certain times of the year, some believe on fasting while they are in the hospital. Hindus have a respectful and positive attitude when it comes to health care professionals. However, older generations like to use a more traditional therapy, it is important to know if it will be a possibility to do the traditional therapy. When it comes to ‘washing’ Hindus prefer “free-flowing water for cleansing.” The ‘free-flowing’ indicates the shower of the body and running water before eating. Modesty is one the terms of dress and relationships with the opposite sex. It should always be respectful when talking to the patients. It is mostly important with woman and the elderly.
