In recent years students have increased their use of social media. Schools need to respond to how students are using technology to communicate with society and their peers. Schools must deal with a variety of issues. Issues like cyberbullying, sexting, Isis recruitment, suicides, and other potential threats. Schools should monitor students’ posts on social media because it’ll assist the students, it’ll save the students’ lives, and the district will be able to protect other students’ from the ones that make threats. Schools should monitor posts on social media because it could assist students with troubles. Students too shy to confront someone in real life might find it more comforting to confess their troubles online, where it’s ‘anonymous’. For example, in the article, “Warily, Schools Watch Students on the Internet.” By Somini Sengupt, who works for the New York Times, stated, “…school officials monitor whether students were researching topics like how to build bombs or discussing anorexia.” The quote proves that schools can find out more information about a student’s physical and mental health and get them proper care. Cyberbullying could be detected, but if schools don’t act soon, it could already be too late. For instance, In Somini’s article, he says that “…a 16-year-old boy bragged on, Myspace about having guns at home, and threatened to kill fellow students on a particular date.” That threat could’ve gone undetected and the students that attended that school could’ve been endangered. To sum it up, there are threats being made, but thanks to the new technology, they can be brushed away.
