Cisco Herrera- Research Conductors Cyberbullying and harassment has become a growing issue at Madera High. Social media has become very popular among the youth of the world as a place for people to express themselves and share common interests with friends and family. Social media however has become a source of bullying and harassment perhaps enhancing the terms. A survey conducted at Madera High says that 71% of students are active on social media. Students are constantly tweeting, facebooking, or posting pictures on instagram and utilizing these sources to interact and express thought with their peers.Then there are also peers of these students that post negative thoughts and embarrassing pictures that intentionally hurt the feelings of …show more content…

People go through all of school on a daily basis while being cyberbullied at home so the stress on a student builds up and affects the student in more than one way, which can cause a dramatic change in a person. The cyberbullies affect students and can cause a student to become what people want them to be rather than being themselves, being original. The staff at Madera high was asked if they have encountered a case of cyberbullying or have had a student ask for help through a situation and 75% of the staff have never encountered a case of cyberbullying among their students. Students do not necessarily go to staff members for help with personal issues unless there is a sense of trust with that individual staff member. There are unique situations where a student does confront a staff member if they feel comfortable with communicating with the staff member about personal issues. How can staff help when there is an incident of cyberbullying and how can they stop it? What precautions can be taken to avoid the cyberbullying issue all together, we can possibly make students take internet responsibility classes to prevent cyberbullying in the future. Students must also become comfortable with expressing their issues with staff if they want help with overcoming the situation and cyberbullies.Cyberbullying is growing among the students at Madera high and only getting worse. The schools and parents along with the students must become active in finding a solution that will help students overcome and put an end to cyberbullying and harassment online, within the schools. How can the staff become more active in helping students with their issues outside of the classroom. Helping students with cyberbullying and harassment may lead to less bullying at school and lower the stress factor for some students allowing the students to focus more on academics.
