Why Do Schools Should Have A Set Dress Code

When I was in seventh grade I got dress coded by a teacher for wearing a spaghetti strap dress, which is basically a tank top.I ended up having to serve a detention because of it. Schools should have a set dress code that students should have to follow and if they don’t follow it then they should be punished. Dress codes would be beneficial in schools because it would decrease the amount of violences and drug use in school, maintain a safe and stable learning environment, and it would reduce the amount of bullying in schools. The author Larry Wilder states that, “When all the students are in the same uniform, they will be able to focus on their studies instead of wondering if they fit in. No student will be concerned with how their clothes look. Uniforms eliminate the need for competition, especially among female students. There is very little distraction for the students when everyone is in the same type of clothes.” This specific quote helps support the reason that having school uniforms or even just a school set dress code would help the kids learn and not be distracted by what people are wearing. This quote also proves that the student’s will be focused on their work instead of worrying about what the other students are saying about what they are wearing. Another quote that helps prove that having school uniforms would help maintain a safe and stable learning environment for the students is that “Research shows that when schools implement a uniform policy, it improves grades, while it reduces tardiness, skipped classes and suspensions. One reason why people would be against school uniforms is that it would cause their parents to spend more money on their kids for school. The other reason why people may say that having school uniforms would not be an excellent idea is that kids would be worried about being bullied because of how they look in said uniforms. Actually having school uniforms would decrease the amount of bullying in schools. If you think about it a large amount of kids these days get bullied for not having name brand clothes or shoes. With that being said, having school uniforms would help out substantially with that because we would all be wearing the same thing and nobody would be bullying anyone for that reason. Perhaps most revealing was the fact that 80 percent of the girls and 62 percent of the boys reported liking to wear uniforms.” with the information that he collected he found out that girls and boys actually liked having uniforms in school.
