Firestone is also has been given the name of the Campus for International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Akron School for the Arts. As this school strives for excellence in academia they offer a various number of college preparatory courses and programs. One program is the International Baccalaureate courses. These classes are considered the most rigorous courses that a school can offer. Firestone will be entering their seventeenth year of being a part of this prestigious program. Of Firestone’s seventeen classes of IB graduates, over 75% have earned the prestigious IB Diploma. Firestone continues to surpass the state, national and the world average. One answer could be due to the fact that Firestone has so many programs to offer students have to choose which program works best for them. On top of the IB program the school also offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These courses are taught at an accelerated pace but not as rigorous as the IB program. Firestone had 30.4% of their student population enrolled in AP courses. Students excel in this program as well, they had 28.4% of the students enrolled score a three or higher on the AP exams. They have also had 14.4% of their students’ population earn an Honors Diploma, which requires the students to take certain coursework during their time in the building. The one downside that one could see inside this building when it comes to academia is the lack of services for gifted students. This is the second part of the schools second name, Akron School for the Arts. There is no other school in the district that offers this arts program. The Akron School for the Arts is designed for the serious student in drama, dance, visual art, or vocal and instrumental music who plans for a career in an arts profession. Over a four-year period, students will earn eight credits in art electives and upon graduation will receive a diploma which reflects this concentrated study. Students in this program participate in a number of competitions that are held city, state, and country wide. They also strive to perform in about 3-4 productions a year, that are held within the building. This program can only be entered by audition and is open not only to the students in the district but students outside of the district as well. You then have a group of students in the building that are here because they live in the area. These students came to school, take the regular education classes and participate in the various extracurricular activities offered. These are the students that most teachers have and work with the most to motivate them to complete their work. For some teachers these are the only students they teach and they use many different strategies in the classroom to keep this students motivated to
