When a person hears the two words “JROTC cadet,” one's mind conjures the image of stone cold male and female faces, repetitive cadence calls, and sharp clean uniforms. Although this is the initial thought that a person might have about the high school junior program, students actually learn more than just the definition of a buzz cut. Participation in JROTC teaches students valuable lessons such as integrity, service, and excellence. JROTC teaches students the importance of integrity. Integrity is acting in line with one's personal moral beliefs and having honesty on a day to day basis. Firstly, JROTC teaches cadets that they can earn the title of having integrity by not deceiving their peers, by being polite, and by having sound moral beliefs. Lastly, JROTC teaches students that providing service without any recognition or gain is an award itself. When cadets provide service before self, they not only learn a valuable lesson but also help their patriotic nation and community. The program also teaches cadets to be excellent in all that they do. Firstly, JROTC teaches cadets that if they have a task, then they should do it to their best ability; in other words, it teaches that if something is worth doing, then it is worth doing well. Second, the program teaches that in order for high school students to have success and be excellent in a line of work, they must find the motivation, make a commitment, and show initiative for the task or job. Lastly, JROTC teaches that in order for a cadet’s work to have excellence, he or she must have pride in the final completed assignment.
