Erica Goldson, valedictorian from the Coxsackie-Athens High School graduating class of 2010, gave a somewhat controversial speech during the school’s graduation ceremony. Goldson ascertained that the goal of the American education system is to create a standardized method of imparting information on students rather than aiming to encourage each individual’s distinctive qualities and develop students’ understanding and personal drives. The majority of high-achieving students, including myself, will most likely concur with Goldson’s views on American education and would be able to gather several points of defense for the assertions made in her speech. To convey her message to the audience, Goldson relies heavily on her personal experiences competing for the number-one spot in her class to showcase evidence of the dilemma that she, along with many other students, experience in schools all across America. First, she recounts her experiences focusing on short-term goals that distract from actual learning.
In “here I stand”, Erica Goldson encourages change in the American schooling system. Erica points out a lot of flaws in the schooling system. No one is learning to learn, everyone is learning to graduate. People aren’t studying in order to learn more, people are studying in order to get through school faster. School puts down the creativity located in each and every one of us.
en Z1791763 EPFE 321 Mid-term Over the years there have been many different views on the direction that education and schooling will take in the role of the United States society taken by influential people. Some of these people included the Puritans of the Plymouth Colony, who believed that children needed to work to prevent them from being influenced by the devil. Thomas Jefferson who believed that everyone needs to be educated for the betterment of society and that people should earn their respect and merits and that it shouldn’t be just given out for nothing. Horace Mann started to try and standardize schooling so that if children moved they would still be learning nearly the same curriculum that they had left, he also tried to further
In fact, after carefully examining the inner workings of the TDSB, the individual schools, and class it is safe to conclude that the TDSB models a system which focuses on the development of adolescences. The development of cognition is essential for students to understand harder concepts. It allows students to make connections to abstract course material, thus helping them learn at a faster rate. This issue is already addressed in Dr. Norman Bethune, as there are plenty of resources to help students develop their cognitive ability. These resources include a fully functional library and many kind hearted teachers that will help students grow.
Todays twelve year trip through knowledge has (unknowingly) fabricated students from the same cloth. These same students are just statistics, they are just test scores published by greedy states vying for the title of “Good Educators.” Which further proves that America has a flawed school system, not only in the sense that students are slaves to the lofty test score goals but, schools also suppress creativity and the
Auburn uses math as a metaphor for the human experience while also developing the idea that logic and creativity are both equally important when searching
Too many Valley districts are forced into choosing between making repairs to keep students safe and investing in the updates and innovation that will prepare students for 21st-century jobs. ” It shouldn’t be an option between the safety of students and innovation; schools should have both safety and academic improvements to prepare students for the future. Schools should be provide money to combat these issues for the students’ well being and reconstruction they
Rose presents a case study about a distressed young woman named Andrea, who wants to go into premed, but her introductory chemistry course at college is really testing her fundamental educational base (Rose, 1989, p.190). Rose (1989) states, “Andrea could memorize facts and formulas but not use them to solve problems and her inability was representative of a whole class of difficulties experienced by freshmen. What young people come to define as intellectual competence what it means to know things and use them is shaped by their schooling” (p.190). I think that Andrea’s struggles with quantitative reasoning in the sciences and students who are struggling with their writing stem from the same source that Rose points out, their intellectual competence

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics is proof that prosperity is a possibility for students who may not be where they intend to stay in their future. I wasn’t aware of the wonders that were possessed within the walls of the school until my friend Sam invited me to attend a SmarTalk session. I was amazed when I came to the realization that this school has the power to change my life, academics, and especially my future. I am drawn to become a student at SCGSSM to further: my academic interests. abilities, and talents.
First I thought, “How do I go about explaining the concept of hundreds and thousands to kids who are obviously still struggling with the fundamentals of reading, writing, and spelling; as well as mathematics?” Then I started to contemplate on how much the school system has changed, and how much it has stayed the same since I was their age, and that I would have to change my tactics in order to adjust with the times, as well as different students ranging from a diverse set of schools from various ages and grade levels; thus being one of the biggest challenges of all, as a future educator. When I was their age, each and every student had their very own EAI Education Grade–Level Math Kits; which helped with identifying the different shapes, colors, and patterns. It allowed us to tell time and differentiate between hot and cold temperatures.
Despite the push for STEM curriculums and my grandfather’s plea for me to study math, I want to be a teacher and by improving the lives of our youth, work towards the ideals of equality that America prides itself on. I’m a strong believer that our current education system places far too much emphasis on grades and testing. The testing we face as young as five-year-olds essentially tests obedience and memorization, proving little about intelligence. However, I genuinely believe my experience at Appalachian State and the Honors College, would differ greatly. I believe I would learn how to think rather than what to think.

Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists.
