College Admissions Essay: The Honors College

Though my list of goals could go on for pages, they’re all motivated by one common goal: to continuously better myself and the impact I leave upon others. The Honors College would serve as a vehicle for this self-improvement and foster deep relationships with professors and peers, research, and a love for learning that goes far beyond the classroom.
I believe one of the most appealing aspects of the Honors College is the opportunity to research. There are many topics I’m interested in researching, one of them being our public schools and the achievement gap that comes with them. Despite the push for STEM curriculums and my grandfather’s plea for me to study math, I want to be a teacher and by improving the lives of our youth, work towards the ideals of equality that America prides itself on.
I’m a strong believer that our current education system places far too much emphasis on grades and testing. The testing we face as young as five-year-olds essentially tests obedience and memorization, proving little about intelligence. However, I genuinely believe my experience at Appalachian State and the Honors College, would differ greatly. I believe I would learn how to think rather than what to think. This skill is vitally important to my education and to the students I aspire to teach. How can I teach something I myself can not do?
Being in the Honors College would also allow me to take part in a smaller community in a large school. In college, I hope to foster lifelong bonds with fellow students and professors. Taking classes and living along like-minded students would prove the optimal circumstances for that. For me, attending Appalachian State means leaving the secluded town I’ve called home my entire life.
