All your life you are told you need to go to college to be successful. In reality college is a chance to be successful but, doesn’t mean that you will be. In his article “Americas Most Overrated Product” Marty Nemko talks about college student statistics stating, "College is a wise choice for far fewer people than are currently encouraged to consider it” (527). Nemko states, “Among high school students who graduated in the bottom forty percent of their classed, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two thirds had not earned diplomas eight years later” (523). People who end up getting college diplomas hardly ever work in the career that they have a degree in, let alone can get jobs that require a degree.

For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.
For the century, people have considered that education is most profitable speculations in culture and more benefits to gain. The early history of United State many people did not attend college. In the old day, college was not necessary to attend for everyone and get a degree have a stable career. However, because of technological advance, economic growth and ever-growing competition in the job market it becomes compulsory to attend college after high school. After technology advance and economy growth, it required a college degree to become middle class in United State.
In this day and age, succeeding without a college degree seems outlandish and impossible. While that means a dedication to education for those still undergoing their studies, it often means returning to or starting college for adults well over college age. Beginning at roughly age twelve, children of the millennial generation are told to decide what they want in life as early as possible and to commit to at least a college level education; if they do not, they will not be able to succeed. Pressures of that aside, if this stigma proves true, what happens to the previous generation, for whom college was a choice? Are they doomed to fail?
Most high school students often wonder what they will need in order to be successful in college. For my English class, my English professor gave us a service learning project, where we were put into small groups with high school seniors and/or juniors. We talked about what they would need to be successful not only in a college their first college level English course, but in general college classes as well. During my service learning experience, I spoke to a couple of seniors from Largo High School, in Maryland, and learned that they are very curious about what they will need in order to be successful, not only in general college classes, but also their first college level English course. However, having a college education will give you a much higher chance for you to have that job you have always wanted,(the car,etc.). Therefore, what I am saying is that college is a great tool to become successful and it is better with it than without it. Although opponents believe that college is not needed because of the amount of money that is involved to pay for college. This idea is not valid because in the future,(if attending college) the amount of money you spend for college will be similar to a investment that can change you life.
I strive for greatness in all that I do, and yes that comes with a few failures that I have had to face, but as Winston Churchill once said: "Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.". Going through high school I faced many challenges that almost every teenager can relate to like: bullying, failing a test or quiz, being stressed out about a paper, and the biggest one to me, what am I going to do after high school. I'm not sure what my true calling in life is just yet but figuring out what to do next is like a puzzle: half the fun is trying to figure it out. The University Of Minnesota-Duluth has always been my dream school. I have decided this is the place where I would like to embark on my college journey.
