“There’s no reason that the zip code you’re born into should determine your success or failure in school.” Whoever has said this quote, is completely correct. Children have a more innocent outlook on life. They do not yet know the difference between a good or bad education, and do not know they’ve been set up for failure. The documentary, Waiting For Superman, revolves around children who were born into an insufficient education zone with parents who can’t resolve the issue for various reasons.
Adults with enough money are able to choose to buy houses in areas with good schools for their kids. The success of children is also affected by who they are going to school with because kids are strongly influenced by their peers. Therefore, if a child is in an extremely competitive school environment they are more likely to work hard and succeed. A negative school environment where kids don’t feel safe and no one is trying to learn
This is a great question that I will answer. How does place shape the individual? Well, I believe that place can have a huge impact on people and how they later grow up. I’ve heard that in the place where you grow up you can make very strong connections and relationships with that place and it becomes a part of your identity. I believe that it’s true because I love my home and I’ve lived there my whole life and have grown to love all my neighbors in my community and I feel like my home has had a huge impact on my future and the way I grew up.
According to me, it will be easier to coordinate if there will be a small number of schools, as there will be a lower student-teacher ratio. This approach to schooling- the mini school or shop front school has been tried in a number of communities across the states. The intimacy and small scale of school should be imitated widely since these things alone make possible the human contact capable of curing the diseases we have been naming with such frequency for last ten years. Spatial variety and ambiance can reinforce a gradient of public-to-private space. People want opportunities for both.
The type of school can also have an effect on the outcomes and having the economic means to afford a better educational institution can make a difference, which most dysfunctional families struggle
Therefore, making the class larger and more difficult to teach. As a result, there is less time for the teachers to spend one-on-one time with each child. A larger class presents more distractions for the classmates. It makes it ten times harder to focus on the curriculum. Students in larger class sizes are often less engaged in classroom activities.
In the inner-city, schools are given less money per pupil compared to schools in the suburbs. Students in the wealthy schools have better opportunities because they take better classes in high school. A student in the suburbs could be taking three and four AP classes, while students in the inner-city schools have to take the basic classes they are offered. Most times, the students are prepared for college-level work because of this, which makes their drop out rates higher.
School Position School position in the system of schools can be influenced by a variety of factors. For Loganlea SHS, its geographic location and demographic characteristics plays an important role in hampering school success. People living in a low SES within the Loganlea suburb tend to restrict children development and lower academic aspirations and expectation of their children. A number of parents with low level of education attainment are likely to underestimate the value of education and academic capability, as a result, they have less participation and support for the school. Due to low household incomes, parents may be unable to afford to buy supporting learning materials and resources such as books to create a positive literacy environment
For example, charter schools in Wisconsin have performed better than public schools overall (Witte). Conversely, statistics from neighboring Minnesota show the opposite trend (Race). Oftentimes, proponents of school choice will argue that allowing parents to pick the best education for their child allows the tide of the free market to life all boats and improve instruction methods at every school. If public schools face the threat of losing students to higher performing charter schools than they will increase their performance to compete. However, researches have noted that sometimes parents choose school for their children based on factors outside of education performance.
Charter schools offer better, more flexible educational options for families because they are “more reflective of parent and community priorities through the alternative programs that cater to special interests and needs (Woods 2010)” as opposed to the cookie-cutter public school system. Even the most distinguished public schools that are located in the best communities do not necessarily offer educational options that are fitted for every child. Determinants may include special needs students,the size and location of the school, socio-economic factors, as well as the academic ambition of the child. Charter schools tend to be smaller than their traditional counterparts which fosters a more personal and creative approach to teaching and learning. Many have a specialized academic focus in math, sciences, and in the arts, creating a community hub for families from all different backgrounds.
In a small town if an individual does something bad, everyone knows about it. Compared to a city gossip and rumors get around a lot more slowly than they do in a small town. In a small town, everybody knows everybody. Not only is gossip a problem in a small town but so is crime. Also, compared to a city, most small town people are low or minimum wage workers, such as factory workers or someone who works in a convenient store.
According to some research life is better outside of cities which can lead to the belief that cities with large parks, outdoors and more do a lot better than those which are cement jungles. The question of whether or not my neighborhood makes me happy is something that changes constantly. Location, the ability to walk to classes or use public transportation to classes does make me happy but when it is too hot outside to walk and I am no longer in classes I am too far from being in nature and too far from work to make me happy because it has turned into a feeling like all I do is commute which has also been proven to be one of the worst parts of many peoples days according to previous module
I do believe that I am not the only person that I had conceived the misconception that urban schools are bad. In an article I found titled, “Urban and Rural Schools Research: Implications for School Governance they say that, “Urban schools seem to have relatively few problems with respect to academic achievements, discipline, and teacher quality when compared with their rural schools” (Lomotey & Swanson, 1989, p. 436). I found this interesting because this is a peer reviewed and scholarly article and they even have this misconceptions that urban schools are bad schools, but from what I have seen in urban schools to rural schools I really do think they are equal when it comes to respect, academic achievements, discipline, and teacher quality. I do not think that urban schools have more problems than rural schools do! A city is a good place to continue the further education and to find a suitable job. A city can provide government facilities to its people which makes easy to sustain the life and to perform the task. In addition, the city may be regarded as a relatively permanent concentration of population, together with its diverse habitations, social arrangements, and supporting activities. Cities might differ in cultural aspects and from other types of human settlement and association. Today I am comparing and contrasting my hometown, Kathmandu and the city I am living in, Colorado.
