The story, Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare is a popular tragedy in which two star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, are caught in between an ancient family feud which leads to both their deaths. In this story, the best friend of Romeo, Mercutio acts as the most pivotal character because of how he provides important events and turning points and improves character development; the influence of Mercutio may suggest a theme of how friends are important.

It should be noted that Mercutio acts as a deciding factor in the play. Through the duration of the play, Mercutio’s presence and actions influence important decisions made by other characters. The last way Mercutio’s presence influences the story is by adding a theme. Mercutio’s friendship with Romeo signifies the importance of friends. In Act 3 Scene 1, Romeo says after Mercutio’s death, “This gentleman, the prince's near ally, My very friend, hath got his mortal hurt, In my behalf; my reputation stained.” As seen, Romeo greatly praises Mercutio and is distraught at his death and it is obvious that he misses the presence of Mercutio.
