1. The Archaic period went from around 800-480 BC. Notable persons from this time include Homer, who is best known for writing the Iliad and the Odyssey, and Pythagoras who contributed much to philosophy and mathematics.
Classical Greece ranged from about 510-323 BC. During this time, the Persian and Peloponnesian wars occurred which had long lasting effects on the development of Greek for centuries to come. During this time, Socrates and Plato had lived and are known to this day for their philosophical insights.

He was descended from a powerful and influential family, affording him wealth and the ability to pursue education which he believed had a great importance in directing one’s thought and actions. His political achievements include speeding up the Delian League’s creation of the Athenian empire as well as being involved in the Peloponnesian Wars. He was elected strategos, which was a military general, and this was a position he held until his death.
