Teaching religion in schools has always been a social issue in education. However, recently it has had a snowball effect and has built into a monster. Religion is one of the hottest topics amongst educators and administrators in recent years. It’s a battle that may or may not have an ending. Along with schools, there are churches and scientists in the great debate. A bigger issue arises in the science classes. Do we teach creationism along side evolution? Should we just teach evolution and forget creationism in general? Can religion impact the development of a child? Can learning to much delay their developmental progress? This paper will explore these questions on this hot topic.
Should we continue to only teach evolution, or should we teach creationism alongside? Evolution is the base of modern biology. Darwin has laid the blueprints for what many believe to be the truth about why humans are the way the are today. There is ground breaking evidence that backs up Darwin’s theory of evolution. Scientifically speaking, a theory is “ A set of universal statements that explains some part of the natural world formulated and tested on the basis of evidence, internal consistency, explanatory power.” The theory of evolution meets all these requirements. However, when touching base with other religions they learn that people come from different backgrounds and have a better understanding of why other people do what they do. Multicultural Education is something that the world is striving for. If we can get teachers to buy into teaching religion we would be one step closer to that goal.
