There are many books that provide important information about prevalent issues and current ideas, yet these books have been censored or banned in many schools around the U.S. Why? They use harsh language or include graphic scenes or topics. However, these aren’t included in the text because the author just felt like including it. They are included because the author wanted to convey a message, expose readers to new concepts and topics, and provide accurate, detailed information to the public. The authors also use this intense language and realistic speech to show the readers the extent of major issues, like racism. Instead of completely forbidding “the possession of certain knowledge, the way said knowledge is acted upon is what really matters.” (Fletcher, G. 2017, n.p.) Simply banning certain knowledge will not solve the problem, but create an even bigger issue by shadowing people from the information they want. The sooner a population is exposed to information, the quicker they will adjust to it and mature. People know what they want/don’t want to read and should make their reading decisions accordingly, but “people should be free to read whatever they want, even if someone else doesn’t want to.” (Fletcher, G. 2017, n.p.) If a book is available to the public, then those who choose to read it can and those who do not want to read do not have to. However, just because some people don’t want to read it doesn’t mean that the rest of the people who do want to read should be limited in their choices of reading material.
