Why Should Fallen Angels Be Banned

I recently checked out the book, Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers from our media center and I also found out that this book was a “banned book”. After reading it, my English teacher told me that Armstrong had banned this book and this really confused me. After reading Fallen Angels I do not see one reason why this book should be banned from anywhere. This book was about how a 17 year old boy signs up for the army and gets stationed in Vietnam, he later meets 4 other American gentleman. They all thought this would be a swift, effortless task since the war was winding down, but as the book goes on, they all soon realise they all desire the same thing, to make it out of the war alive. Some readers might say that this a war novel, so that means it is very gory and graphic. Now some readers might argue that this book swears too much or this book overused the word faggot. This might be a righteous argument, but most people would not take into consideration that this book was written in the 80’s and based in the 60’s, during a war. Back then saying the word faggot was not as extreme as it is now and as for the swearing that takes place, these men were in a war. On page 163, it says “an hour and a half has passed and still no chopper, we heard mordors going off all around us” then a man named Monaco says “where's the fucking chopper”. This part of the book clearly shows the extreme times these men were going through and I would imagine that swearing just comes with the territory. Plus I would think most kids in high school have heard some swear words and could manage to read a book with some
