Driving is the ultimate freedom a teenager receives once they hit the age of sixteen. It is a dose of indepence that allows for a teen to finally not be fully dependent on their parents and enter the real world. However there are some concerns with the driving age in many states. Many individuals believe that sixteen is too young to hold such a large responsibility, and that eighteen would be a safer age. Adolescents don’t fully develop until they are almost twenty five. That is almost a ten year difference from the current driving age at sixteen. Teenagers aren’t fully matured and may not understand the consequences of them making a poor mistake while behind the wheel. Earning one’s license is a proud moment in someone’s life and is a monument for something they have worked towards. Owning a car is almost an even greater honor. Some parents may require that their child pay for all or partial of their car and gas bills. This itself lays a heavy responsibility on one’s shoulders. It teaches money management and encourages a teenager to get a job and start saving for their future. Learning these life skills at an early age would be more beneficial to a teenager then learning them at eighteen. Earning one’s license not only increases the amount of responsibility at home, but also as a citizen in your community. Learning to drive at sixteen makes one more aware of the laws in their community, and puts the safety of others drivers on the roads first. There is less of a rush to earn your full license, making the learning process stronger and less room for mistakes.
