The four-day school week policy might seem controversial to some because they don’t see the benefits that it actually comes with. The four-day school week enables students to gain an extra day off while still receiving the same amount of instruction, allowing them to devote more time to their studies and other activities. Everybody on this planet can agree that sleep is a beautiful thing. Whether your an adult, a baby, a younger, or an older child, it seems pretty clear that everyone of us can agree that we need more sleep throughout the week. Kids should have there schools start at a later time because that means more sleep! Although many of our bodies don't want to fully go to bed early, we still may want to have more time to sleep in the morning. Kids that have activities outside of or after school, get home late enough, along with sometimes loads of homework, and don't get to bed until an unnecessary late time.
Government believes extending the school day or even extending the amount of days a student attends school make will a big difference academically. Some are even pushing for year round school. This is not the best choice. For one extending the school year to a whole year will actually do the opposite then planned. The students and faculty would get tired of the full- time schooling and not use the time wisely.
Jayden Miller English 12 CP Mrs. Crabtree 3 April 2023 Four-Day School Week There are many ways a four day school week has shown to be better for students and teachers than a five day school week; some examples include increased morale, less disciplinary referrals, and more effective teaching. The four day school week is a very effective way for schools to become better for teachers and students. First of all, schools with four day school weeks do not have as many disciplinary problems with their students. One way this is shown is when Donis-Keller and Silvernail states, “[Some] of the most positive and ubiquitous findings in several studies and reports examining the four-day week has been in increased attendance for both teachers and students…
This quote helps explain why we should have a four day week. This isn't the only reason though. In addition, not only are tests scores better, but also student attendance. In the article, The Four Day School Week, by Don Kordosky, the author states, “ Attendance in some schools increased 3% as against available instructional hours” (Crosscut: "The Four-day school week: why less really is more").
The school day becoming longer, a student’s worst nightmare, being stuck with the teacher whose class you dread to go to every day. However, it might help students not only improve grades but achieve more than they could've before. In a couple states, studies have shown that increasing the school day’s length by no more than twenty-five percent has resulted in a test score improvement of over five percent. In other schools adding a mere 90 minutes to the school, day length meant that many were improving drastically. In Massachusetts schools that have added a thirty percent increase in the school day length have not only improved faster than most other schools in the state, but have also lessened the achievement gap in math by 2.5%, science by 15%, and in language arts by a whopping 35%.
Because of a four day school week, classes are extended, therefore giving the teachers a longer teaching period. Charlene Heil, a business and technology teacher says, “I actually have been able to get more done. When you have a longer time period you can have more depth of instruction.” The conclusion can be drawn that teachers and students like the four day school week that they did a better job, and their productivity was
Imagine adding 90 minutes to your school day. About 1,500 schools across the country have extended school hours. Lots of people are debating whether the school day should be longer or shorter. One reason the school day should be longer, considering it helps out some parents. Some parents work late on school nights, and they are not able to pick up their children on time.
Critics of the shortened school week point to the fact that children who are at risk, especially those having learning difficulties may not be able to get the most out of the new program. As it might seem, 4-day school weeks would work best for kids who are self-motivated and would not serve the needs of those who do not learn in the same manner. This means a lessened focus, which can cause grades to drop. It also means that there is a higher cost for parents. Though schoold districts can save money with four day school weeks, it is the other way around for many parents.
Debate essay Ask anyone and I’m pretty sure they would tell you they want longer weekends. Students start looking forward to 3pm on Friday the minute their alarm wakes them up on Monday morning. Weekends are opportunities for students to let go of stress and to focus on the activities they enjoy. Some people just want longer weekends because they’re too lazy or busy. Longer weekends would make school more and exciting for students because it would give them more opportunities for self-directed work.
My claim is that we should have an 8 hour school day because if we do we'll have less homework and get to spend time with friends we only see at school. I found this information on a website called “Scholastic.com”. This website consists of articles, they survey members of the staff and get their opinions on things. A longer school day will also enable kids able to do extracurricular activities that they don’t do, for example, theater.
