When people hear the name William Shakespeare, they may immediately think of his amazing literary accomplishments, his one-of-a-kind plays, and of course, the widespread universal appeal of his works. But have you ever wondered how he came to gain such widespread appeal? The reasons are clear: his works included unique conflicts and characters; they were open to interpretation; and they were able to relate to all readers. These three traits of Shakespeare’s works are the roots of his enticing stories. Shakespeare was extremely well known for his diverse characters and various plot lines. As said in Shakespeare’s Universal Appeal Examined, Shakespeare wrote about “the living and the dead, the old and the young, men and women, self and society, integrity and role-play, insiders and outsiders.” Since his characters are all of different ages, genders, ethnicities, and social statuses, everyone is able to find someone to connect with.
