My goal is to become a primary doctor working with underserved communities, especially the Latino community. I know VCOM is dedicated to creating an engaging learning environment to educate the next generation of doctors to provide care of the utmost quality. As someone who grew up in a medically-underserved county and desires to address the needs of my community, I can relate to the mission of VCOM to address the needs of medically-underserved populations When I shadowed Dr. Edwin Chan, we discussed potential research projects I could propose to the professors from the UF Department of Anthropology. We agreed I should propose research on the disparate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of color in Alachua County. While the project unfortunately fell through when returning to UF, addressing these disparities remained a forefront concern which I seek to pursue in the future. I anticipate that VCOM, with a commitment to health equity and addressing the needs of underserved communities, will provide me the opportunity to pursue research assessing disparities in healthcare.
There are many core principles encompassed by the mission and values of Pacific University's Physician Assistant Studies program that I know will make Pacific University a great match for me. Ensuring high quality care for patients, valuing diversity, and lifelong learning of evidence based medicine are concepts that should be at the core of healthcare. Also important to me is the need to help underserved populations. Currently working as a medical assistant at a primary care physicians office in Hilo, Hawaii I work with many individuals from underserved communities of the island and I see the need for greater healthcare access in these areas, and I am now committed to continuing to help the underserved as I further my career.
I joined because I wanted to understand the community that I would be taking part in for the entirety of my undergraduate degree. The community itself was within Central Valley, California, which was also known to be largely medically underserved and economically disadvantaged. As a prepared graduate nurse, one should practice their education and training for the community. For example, community service projects at health fairs, clinics, or hospitals are a few suggestions that a prepared graduate nurse can do within the community. The Bachelor of Arts selective courses appeal more to me with the vast selection of Health Promotion, Professional Leadership, and especially Social Justice. I truly believe that a BA in Public Health from the University of Washington is vital to my future. The degree will help prepare me for a position of leadership to help our nation’s service members become more productive, and healthier, which will allow them in turn to lead happier and more productive lives with their families.
I want to be that physician and provide healthcare tailored to the underserved. During my two years with Teach for America, I taught chemistry at Booker T. Washington High School in Overtown, Florida. This is one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Miami. Once called “Colored Town” and considered the center of black culture and commerce, it was decimated when highway I-95 was built right through the center of town in the 1960s.
After I graduate from with an MPH I plan to be certified as a public health professional and I aspire to work for organizations such as Center of Disease Control, World Health Organization, and United States Agency for International Development. I believe that George Washington University/Milken Institute School of Public Health will enable me to reach my goals in life and create a lasting impact in society. GW’s program is one of the leading public health universities in the United States and it would be an honor and an admirable trait to be able to attend and successfully graduate from a school of such prestige. In addition, the online format for the MPH program is conducive and beneficial to my learning experience due to its flexibility and attainability; it allows me to receive quality education while continuing with the rigors of life.
