World War I This War was also known as the Great War because it was the first war involving most of the major countries. It started out as a conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia but it quickly spread to Germany, Great Britain, Russia, and France. These countries were required to join this war because of pre-existing treaties. This war starts with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the next in line for the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914. The emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time, Franz Joseph, then declared war on Serbia. Then all of Serbia and Austria-Hungary’s allies joined the war. Then, on August 26 to August 30 1914, the Battle of the Tennenberg took place. This was a very important victory for Germany. About a month later, on September 15, the first trenches were dug. On Christmas day, the soldiers declared an unofficial truce at the Western Front. 1915 was kicked off with a German air raid on England. The on February 4th, Germany declares that any ship that is approaching England will be thought of as a target. On May 7th, a U-boat sank the Lusitania. This killed 1,198 civilians, 128 of them were Americans. To keep the U.S. from entering the war, Germany promised to not sink a ship without warning. From February 21st to December 18th of 1916, the Battle of Verdun, which was the longest battle of the war, was fought. There were about one million lives lost.
