America's politic posters during World War I used a lot of war propaganda. The posters were used for gaining more troops and money for the war. Patriotism was a big message that showed up in posters. Illustrators used symbols, words, and colors to show deeper messages on posters. The posters that are going to be discussed in the paper demonstrates different ways propaganda posters were conveyed. Poster two is an image of Uncle Sam pointing forward telling people to join the U.S. Army. Uncle Sam is a popular image of a man dress very patriotic American to recruit soldiers for World War I. His position is to make the reader feel like he is personally demanding them to join the army. Uncle Sam is another name for the U.S. government, so the reader is also feeling like the government telling them too. He is wearing a blue coat, white shirt, red bow tie, and top hat that has a blue stripe with white stars on it. He is dressed this way to show America's patriotism. During this time black was being discriminate against in America. Black people was view as apes because of white people thought blacks were aggressive and dumb. An ape used to view Germans has aggressive and the black people of European. When white Americans see this poster they can make a personal connection and see how Germans are bad like black people. The bat has "kultur" written on it, kultur means German culture. America is written in on the land underneath the ape. The poster has "DESTROY THIS MAD BRUTE'" and "ENLIST IN U.S. ARMY" written on it. The illustrator was trying to frighten Americans by telling them German soldiers are going to destroy America, take their women, and force German culture on America if they do not enlist into the army.
