The Second War began when the Spartan King Archimedes II laid siege to the city of Plataea. The Athenians were able to hold their position until 427 B.C.E., when the city fell. During that time, a revolt by the Spartans as taking place at Mytilene, which put additional pressure on Athens. While they defended and successfully extinguished that revolt, the Athenians made additional progress into Peloponnese, by sea, as well as Italy, by land. Athens’ success eventually ended when they were defeated in an attempt to recover Amphipolis in 422 B.C.E.
Militarization was the most significant cause of World War I because countries were enhancing their militaries in order to increase their power, and it led to new military technologies. Germany and Great Britain were improving their military strength by expanding their army during 1914. “By 1914, Germany had the greatest increase in military buildup. While the Allies blamed Germany for the war too harshly, its actions certainly did directly contribute to World War I, as did those of Austria Hungary. However, each country involved fostered militarism in their country, and became in entrenched in the web of alliances and race for imperial power, all causes of the environment that led to the Great War. Therefore, it could be said that all European countries were responsible, in part, for World War I, as reflected in Documents 5, 6, and 7.
In 1945, America used a new and controversial weapon to annihilate thousands of Japanese civilians to end World War II. Stretching from 1939 to 1945, WWII was a battle between the Axis and Allied powers. The Axis powers wanted to attack communists and imperialize nations. The Allied powers wanted to defend themselves against the Axis powers and protect their nation. The Allied powers defeated the Axis powers, but Japan continued to attack the Pacific coast.

World War I was also known as the “war to end all wars” because of the different warfare strategies like trench warfare, poison gas, airplanes, tanks, etc. These warfare tactics were violent and had great slaughter and destruction of countries and alliances. The Western Powers responded to aggression with appeasement, and in 1939 the world was plunged into World War II, proving to the world that collective security is a better response to aggression. The clouds of war were forming during the 1930’s and even earlier. World War I led dictators to rise, and caused anger in many people. The Treaty of Versailles was constantly being violated because of the ineffectiveness of it and the League of Nations it created. There were many causes of World War II, however it can be narrowed down into a couple of things that really pushed it over the edge. The two main causes of war were Axis power aggression and the appeasement of Axis powers, because the Allied powers and League of Nations appeased them, the aggressors could grow stronger without retaliation.
