I am an American. I choose this word to represent me, although others may not acquiesce and won’t categorize individuals who aren’t born in this country to be Americans. In others perspective, to be an American means to have the blood of an American. But I on the other hand, don’t have the heritage and the qualifications that are expected of me to be an American but that is the word that I have chosen to describe myself regardless. The word ‘exceptional’ or ‘exceptionalism’ is normally used to connote a person or a thing that is above the ordinary, thus, extraordinary. The term ‘American Exceptionalism’ does not stray far from this ordinary connotation. It implies that the United States is a country like no other because of certain qualities that it possesses that is not found in others. This concept has its roots in French historian Alexis de Tocqueville’s observations of America. In the second volume of his book Democracy in America, de Tocqueville wrote “The position of the Americans is therefore quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one” (de Tocqueville 518).

Although never formally defined in the novel, the term Americanah can be inferred by use of her friends.

Growing up in America is extremely hard. It doesn't matter what sex or what gender someone consider themselves. Nevertheless, it is especially hard if you are apart of LGBTQ community. As the global environment becomes more interconnected it is important to understand the cultural context of society. Being able to respond to cultural differences is important for any person who wants to manage a business internationally. In nearly every country, corporations of all sizes are doing business internationally due to the fact that a good percentage of a company’s revenue can come from doing business overseas. One of the major challenges of doing business internationally is not understanding cultural diversity, stereotypes, perceptions, and values ( Hodgetts, R. M, pg.120). Uruguay, for example, is a country in South America that is much like the United States in that it has a somewhat free market economy ruled by a constitutional democracy for checks and balances (Uruguay - Politics, government, and taxation).

It’s a blessing to be living in America because it is very beautiful and very safe as well.
