Writing 101 courses has helped me in a variety of ways in improving and gaining skills in writing. I learned how to compose several types of essays including informal, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these essays. Every week, the class was given one of these types of an essay to go through at home then discuss them in class, I would definitely get ideas on how to start and end each topic and what techniques to use. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially begin writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. All the main and supporting ideas are present and as a result, the bulk of the essay is done. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly. I’ve also learned how to properly write a summary. Although the work was hectic most of the time, knowing that I will be able to use the skills I have learned and practice more makes it worthwhile. I have gained so much insight in this course about my style and habits of writing. One of the features of this class was being able to choose whatever topic we liked. In the way, I was able to retain new skills that I have learned and applied them to my writings. I mapped out my writing timetable so that I could efficiently finish my work on time. I will continue to keep a journal as I do now because I saw that it helps me in retaining information. Ultimately, in applying the skills that I retained and constantly practicing them, they will become habits when I write. However nominal the change was, I think I have improved since I have been in this Writing 101
