The Powwow: A Culturally Significant Event On April 28th at 2 PM I volunteered to work at the powwow. The powwow holds a cultural significance for Native Americans and celebrates heritage. I observed a beautiful display of culture and I gained a real understanding of diversity. As someone from a Hispanic background I understand the significance of keeping culture alive.

Homecoming is one of the bigger events that comes through the city. I say this because during that time you will see many venders out trying to support their business and to also help network with many different people. Homecoming brings a lot of money to the community because many alumni come back to see their school do good and to have fun. Homecoming is the time where many people can also give back to the community and to try to build and better the community itself. Thousands and thousands of dollars come through the city during that time.
In honor of the first ever Asian American Heritage Week, several University of Central Florida organizations came together to host a series of events promoting Asian culture. Asian American Heritage Week was led by eight organizations: Asian Pacific American Coalition, Asian Student Association, Chinese American Student Association, Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Filipino Student Association, Korean Student Association, Pi Delta Psi Fraternity and Vietnamese American Student Association. Asian American Heritage Week, which took place March 14-20, included events each day of the week including a fundraiser at Blaze Pizza, a game show, a dance workshop and a student pageant. A Pride flag raised on the flagpole of Lilian Osbourne High School was crudely cut down with only tattered remains left behind and replaced with a regular Canadian flag by an unidentified vandal; Criticism regarding the modified Canadian flag raised in the first place has become an issue amongst members of the community. Problems surrounding this situation parallel those that surround the Confederate flag controversy in the United States of America. Both flags are symbolism and of great importance to their demonstrators within the community but contrastingly, can offend other members of the very same communities, especially when replacing their countries official flag. The school had given authorization for the flag to be “raised for one week,” in a show of unity with LGBTQ students and members of the community.

Homecoming is a time when you show your school spirit and pride. We dress up according to the themes set forth by the school. I am participating in the dress up days as well as the parade we are having. After the parade, I am going to be marching with the band in the game. All-in-all I am going to have a busy homecoming week.
