Brownback and the Election of 2010 The 2010 Kansas gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 2010. Incumbent Governor Mark Parkinson, a former Republican who switched to the Democratic Party, had assumed office when the previous Governor Kathleen Sebelius was sworn in as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Barack Obama. Governor Parkinson declined to seek election, even though he had labored to get a stimulus package from the federal government for Kansas.
