The piece of literature “Working at McDonalds” written by Amitai Etzioni in Readings for Writers discusses and argues the many reasons why teenagers working within the fast food industry are impacted negatively. Etzioni does weigh-in on both the pros and cons but includes research and persuasive knowledge to prove that teenage employees working at jobs such as McDonalds is nothing more than blind obedience, skill-less work, and a distraction from their education. To support his thoughts regarding students not having enough time to put effort into school work and complete homework assignments, Etzioni comments: The hours are often long. Among those 14 to 17, a third of fast-food employees (including some school dropouts) labor more than 30
In the article Working at McDonald’s, author Amitai Etzioni expresses a very strong viewpoint as to why working at McDonald 's is hindering our youth more than it is benefiting them in the long run. When you first get the job it seems like a great opportunity to gain work ethic and become independent. However, Etzioni says that these jobs provide little to nothing in fundamental skills that are supposed to help them in the future, and it also limits their creativity and their room for initiative. Fast food jobs like these will distract them, pull them away from school, and make them look at money different. One of Etzioni’s quote that grabbed my attention was when he said,”These are breeding grounds for robot working for yesterday’s assembly
The topic of teenagers having jobs while in high school can be considered controversial and is definitely one that generates a lot of opinion both for and against this practice. Mr. Amitai Etzioni’s has a negative position on this issue as was stated in his article “Working at McDonald’s”. I on the other hand believe that having a job is a way for teenagers to learn how to be independent and obtain good working skills that will stay with them for a lifetime. This essay is an argument pro teenagers working while in high school. The concerns of the opposition will be addressed as well.
In “Working at McDonald’s,” by Amitai Etzioni, he shares his strong certainty that working in fast food restaurants is not healthy for teenagers. I disagree, I feel that working in fast food restaurants is good for teenagers under some conditions, but at other times it could be bad. Mostly jobs disturb school participation and attendance over time. Another reason is that jobs often offer “on the job experience,” but most of the time experience taught is inadequate when it comes to fast food. Lastly, teenage employees can learn to manage their money wisely this can help better prepare them before they get into the adulthood.
The challenge that I chose to accomplish for my fourth Day of Different, was to work at Tim Hortons fast food restaurant. I noticed this challenge was very unique and something different. Working at Tim Hortons can be very challenging because it is a public restaurant and you need to do jobs told correctly. However, this challenge was an opportunity for me to acknowledge how fast food restaurants work. I could also experience the everyday life of how my mother works at Tim Hortons.
To move forward with this project in Sydney a location would need to be acquired. Australian employment costs run higher than the United States. The University Of The Fraser Valley second annual sales careers networking breakfast was an eye opener to a second year student like myself. It showed the many sales oriented opportunities available to students graduating or about to gradate. There were three companies that really stood out to me like Pearson, Xerox, and Apex wireless. All three companies varied from their services and what they had to offer, but at the same time if you looked deeper into it they also had many similarities.
As people have issues about Mcdonalds’ low food quality toward people’s health. However, there is another important area that we have to consider seriously about is how its system, so-called “Mcdonaldization”has influenced and continuously effecting our society.
