The piece of literature “Working at McDonalds” written by Amitai Etzioni in Readings for Writers discusses and argues the many reasons why teenagers working within the fast food industry are impacted negatively. Etzioni does weigh-in on both the pros and cons but includes research and persuasive knowledge to prove that teenage employees working at jobs such as McDonalds is nothing more than blind obedience, skill-less work, and a distraction from their education. To support his thoughts regarding students not having enough time to put effort into school work and complete homework assignments, Etzioni comments: The hours are often long. Among those 14 to 17, a third of fast-food employees (including some school dropouts) labor more than 30
Did you know that more than 160,000 fast food restaurants feed more than 50 million americans every day! In the non fiction text, Mcjobs, by Eric Schlosser, it talks about the “dangers of fast food.” Eric Schlosser states that back in the 1900s there was not a single fast food restaurant in Martinsburg, but still, people somehow managed to eat and survive. Fast food restaurants serve very cheap food along with it being made very fast, but the food is processed and frozen, which can lead to a lot of diseases and disorders. Fast food restaurants might be very cheap and fast, but it is not healthy at all and it can be replaced with a lot of smaller healthier snacks.
In the article Working at McDonald’s, author Amitai Etzioni expresses a very strong viewpoint as to why working at McDonald 's is hindering our youth more than it is benefiting them in the long run. When you first get the job it seems like a great opportunity to gain work ethic and become independent. However, Etzioni says that these jobs provide little to nothing in fundamental skills that are supposed to help them in the future, and it also limits their creativity and their room for initiative. Fast food jobs like these will distract them, pull them away from school, and make them look at money different. One of Etzioni’s quote that grabbed my attention was when he said,”These are breeding grounds for robot working for yesterday’s assembly
They start spending that money on a lot of things except for anything educational which is a very alarming situation for them and for their parents as well. Their parents need to know how they are spending that money and how they should be sending that money. Most of the time the only reason why teenagers start working is because they want to save money for their college studies. Studies revealed that teenagers have considered working here as a great learning experience for them but the writer has completely ignored that aspect as well. According to him, most teens working at places like McDonalds is not provoking sense of responsibility instead it is giving them a shortcut to avoid studies and start earning with little or no education at all.
The topic of teenagers having jobs while in high school can be considered controversial and is definitely one that generates a lot of opinion both for and against this practice. Mr. Amitai Etzioni’s has a negative position on this issue as was stated in his article “Working at McDonald’s”. I on the other hand believe that having a job is a way for teenagers to learn how to be independent and obtain good working skills that will stay with them for a lifetime. This essay is an argument pro teenagers working while in high school. The concerns of the opposition will be addressed as well.
Some people believe students should not work in fast-food chain because they can get distracted by working and the job may not provide them with skilled-based opportunities. In his essay, Amitai Etzioni, points out the bad influence fast-food chains, such as MacDonald’s, have on the students they employ. He thinks that working in fast-food chains can contribute to academic problems. The debate over whether or not students should work during school especially in fast food chain is currently a very controversial topic. I personally support Amitai Etzioni’s idea that working in fast food chains can negatively impact students’ academic careers.
In 2010, 30 percent of teenagers in high school had jobs. The idea of earning money is the main reason teenagers seek employment, whether they need it or want it; however, getting a job while in high school is bad for their health and academic life. Teenagers in high school shouldn't have jobs because of their homework, sleep, and stress. Although the government set limitations on the teenaged work force, their tiring jobs are causing them to not complete homework assignments.
Teens at the age of 14 and above should be able to maintain a job. Getting a job as a teen can be beneficial in many ways for life like at school and other extracurriculars like a sport or club. In fact, having a job as a teen can help to gain a sense of independence and personal responsibility, as well as working a teens mind leading to smarter decisions. Teen jobs are beneficial because they help people develop a sense of independence and personal responsibility/progress. One author, Pamela Paul, an American journalist, helps to prove this idea in her article, “Best Extracurricular May be an After School Job.”
According to the article, when the employers have to pay teens the same as the adults, it often makes more sense for them to hire the adult, more-skilled worker instead of the teen. When the teen get hired, they can learn valuable life skills from work, such as kindness, patience and teamwork. Second, according to the research, “unemployed teens are more likely to drop out of high school and become
Fast food chains are a rapidly growing industry. Although it’s popular fast food overall is not good for the human body. Schools should not serve fast food because it’s unhealthy, expensive and can make kids fat. Maize South Middle School should not serve fast food because it’s unhealthy. One example of fast food being unhealthy is the overwhelming amount of carbs.
Fast food chains are a rapidly growing industry. Although it’s popular, fast food is very unhealthy. Fast food is a bad idea to serve in schools because it’s expensive, addictive, and unhealthy. Maize South Middle School should not serve fast food because it’s expensive. The money you spend on fast food could make 3-6 home lunches.
Finally, a teen that has a summer job can lead them to their career later in life. By letting kids and teens work at a lower age has many benefits for them later in life. Teens are drifting away from being independent and relying on their parents and friends to help them. First of all, jobs can provide extra money for their family. Studies
As people have issues about Mcdonalds’ low food quality toward people’s health. However, there is another important area that we have to consider seriously about is how its system, so-called “Mcdonaldization”has influenced and continuously effecting our society. From the article “McJobs: Mcdonaldization and the Workplace” by George Ritzer, he distributes the idea of how Mcdonaldized system has changed our society into scripted and “programmized” places (Ritzer 1998:140). He has specifically analyzed the McJobs’( job that has been Mcdonaldized) into four elements, which is its efficiency, calculation, prediction and control. As the nature of the world is made of a full of colors, diverse opinions of people naturally exist toward the term
Fast food is a great place to get a first job. Having a fast food first job will help you develop skills such as customer service, working experience, and a small view on how the real world works. Having experience in all of these fields will help anyone progress in life or move onto a better job. This industry is great to get into, but everything has its downfalls.
Being a teenager and having a job in my opinion can cause way too much stress for a teen to carry because of having to balance school, home life, or any extra curricular activities. Most jobs will not care about working a teen past 10:00 on a school night, but doing this will cause the teenager to come home and work on any homework they had for school and not get enough sleep making them tired for school and not being able to stay awake to pay attention. Some teenagers do not have a job, but they do have chores. Chores can also lead to stress if they worry about if they are doing a good enough job or meeting the standards that their parents have made. This can become increasingly difficult if they are also dealing with personal issues as
