Fast food is often the first job choice among teen-agers. Whether it’s the notion that the work is easy, or it is the easiest option for them. Either way, more adolescents are moving into the fast food industry, which bares the question: Is it logical for teens to work while still in high school? It is actually beneficial for adolescents to work in the fast food industry while still in school. This is due to the exposure to work environments they attain, working is now safer than it has been in the past, and they gain necessary and valuable skills that will be used for the rest of their working career. This is due to the regulations and surveillance that are in place that keep workers safe and healthy. One program that instills safety and health regulations is Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Their workers rights website states that they “assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women; by authorizing enforcement of the standards developed under the [OSHA] Act [1970].” The previously stated quote means that the people who work in industry are safe and healthy. Another reason working in fast food is safer now is because of a large quantity of mature adults. According to the Washington Post, “70% of fast food workers are 20 years or older” (5 Myths) This is critical because mature adults will keep an eye on the teens and make sure that little to no accidents will occur. OSHA along with a high concentration of adults make a more secure working environment for teen-agers. This is why it’s safer to work now than it used to be and why it’s good for students to work while still in high
