As I was flipping through the pages of “Modern Dog,” the top lifestyle, advice, and health and wellness magazine for dog lovers, a Pedigree dog food ad with the bright yellow words “Meet Otis” immediately caught my eye. Accompanying those words were the sweet face of a small pug puppy. The ad states that whenever you purchase a Pedigree product, the proceeds will help animals in shelters find loving homes. By simply skimming the ad, I could tell it utilizes pathos, ethos, and logos to appeal to potential consumers. The main image in this ad is the pug puppy, introduced to the audience as Otis, caged behind a fence of a gloomy, dark animal shelter. Otis is just a puppy, but his scrunched up black and beige face bears a wisdom gained by tragedy. His chocolate brown eyes glisten with fear and abandonment. Otis is practically begging the audience to come pick him up and nuzzle him. The pup looked beaten down and the image creates a sense of hopelessness; Otis wishing for a home that he may never get. Although Otis is the main focus of the ad, the setting he is in helps tell the story the ad is attempting to tell. The fence in front of Otis is largely in focus, reminding the reader he is in fact caged inside a small corner for most of the day. Since the audience is reading “Modern Dog” magazine, one could assume that they most likely have a dog of their own. If you own a dog you know how much they love and depend on you; you could not bear to imagine little Otis, gripped with loneliness, probably shivering in the corner of his cramped, jail cell-like room. No one likes to think of fragile puppies left to fend for themselves, only someone with no heart could not care about Otis and the animal shelter.
