Crucial ACA Code of Ethics Section A.1 is essential in developing the client and counselor relationship. The section covers primary responsibility, records and documentation, counseling plans, and support network involvement (ACA, 2014). Dr. Phillip Hemphill, a chief clinical officer, conducted a seminar concerning boundaries and ethics to a group of mental health professionals. During his continuing education seminar, his intent was to bring challenging situations to our awareness. He did this by providing thought provoking scenarios that can be easily encountered by any mental health professional. With each scenario, listeners we asked to think about how they would respond to the situations. He encouraged participation by allowing each participant to feel that their answers were neither wrong nor right, thus creating a respectful environment for each other’s differences within the practice.

In my opinion, I believe one of the most important issues facing counseling is the lack of knowledge about what it entails. Within society, including media, counseling seems to be portrayed as a client laying on a couch seeking advice for problems. Not only do a large population of people believe counseling is simply advice giving, but that problems can be solved starting in the first session.
