The rationale for this curriculum learning area is to enable students to gain scientific conceptual understanding through investigative processes and to use critical and conceptual thinking by linking experiments with a scientific knowledge base. According to ACARA, the science learning area is a “dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavour arising from our desire to make sense of our world through exploring the unknown” which supports the rationale of students gaining an appreciation for science and its contribution to culture and society as well as its application to daily life. These main ideas exemplify fundamental aspects of scientific literacy and are embedded in the science curriculum for each year level. According to Tytler (2007) “the ability to make informed decisions about both personal and global issues is considered a key element of scientific literacy, thus emphasising the importance of engaging learners in the practice at scientific argumentation” which supports the focus for learning through the experimental approach to problem solving and developing skills in analytical and critical thinking.
