Recommended: Pros and cons stronger animal cruelty laws
Abuse and violence never solves anything. Animal abuse is a very serious problem in today's world. The ASPCA is an organization that is against animal abuse, its acronym stands for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The organization is very known for their long, sad, and emotional commercial. Throughout the commercial, it contains the three rhetorical appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos.
ASPCA Animal Cruelty Commercial “Every day in America thousands of animals suffer from cruelty and neglect.” These are the first words that pop on the television when an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals commercial turns on. This commercial was first aired on television in 2007 in America and was created by the company ASPCA. At the root of this artifact its sole purpose is depicted to get the audience (the TV viewers), to support the cause of saving animals lives from being beaten and abused through donations. The desired audience I believe is more specifically animal lovers, and/or pet owners.
Most, if not all, have probably already seen the ASPCA commercial with Sarah McLachlan and know how excruciatingly depressing and emotional the commercial is. It screams success from since the commercial was aired in 2007, and yet, still serves its purpose head on. The simplicity of this commercial has raised over $30 million since it was first aired on T.V., making it the most successful fundraising efforts yet. Be aware that in 2014, the ASPCA annual budget was roughly $14.4 million. (ASPCA Annual Report 2014, 2015).
Bergh’s emotional accounts of the horrors inflicted on animals persuaded the New York State legislature to pass the contract incorporating the ASPCA on April 10, 1866. Nine days later, the first operative anti-cruelty law in the United States was approved, authorizing the ASPCA to examine grievances of animal cruelty and to make arrests. Bergh became accustomed sight on the streets and in the courtrooms of New York. He repeatedly examined slaughter houses, participated with police to shut down dog- and rat-fighting pits and lectured in schools and to adult societies. In 1867, the ASPCA recognized and functioned the nation’s first ambulance for horses.
The ASPCA is an organization that strives to protect the safety, health, and rights of all animals. The acronym stands for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, and this company was the first humane society to be established in North America. Founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh after the first animal cruelty legislation was passed, ASPCA is now the largest humane societies in the world. Bergh founded the organization with the ideal that “animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law.”(ASPCA.org) Similarly to the founding principles, the ASPCA mission statement reads ““to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”
Many animals are abused everyday. Chickens and other farm animals are constantly being killed for food. In this article, “PETA Making a Social Noise: A Perspective on Shock Advertising,” Jonathan Matusitz and Maya Forrester focus on the fact that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) often goes too far with their advertisements. Animal rights groups such as PETA use shock advertising as a means of getting the message that abusing animals, eating animals, or using animals in entertainment is wrong (Matusitz and Forrester). Matusitz and Forrester look to expose PETA’s indecent advertisements, but the argument relies too heavily on pathos than any other rhetorical appeal.
For decades, Australia has cleared land, destroyed native wildlife habitat and not to mention ongoing cruelty to kangaroos, wombats and emus. All to “protect” these sheep, who lives are absolute hell, only to have it end on horrible ships. But, do you know what is actually going on in these ships? Each year, Australia exports over four million live sheep to the Middle East. But, around 40,000 sheep die every year even before they reach their destination.
In a rodeo people are harming and putting these animals in cruelty by harming the animals in the pen. To start, the rodeos put devices on the animals. The devices that were on the animals was called the hot-shot. The hot-shot sends volts up to 50,000 volts. The device is constantly shocking so the animal is always in pain when it is in the show.
Animal Rights Organizations have been battling the use of animals in our cultures through the court systems. “In 2013 the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) filed petitions in 3 trial courts in the state of New York demanding that common law writs of habeas corpus be issued on behalf of four captive chimpanzees.” (Wise par. ) The petitions asked that the courts recognize that chimpanzees are legal persons who possess the fundamental legal right to bodily liberty. All three petitions were denied, they moved the cases to the New York state appellate courts.
In lack of control people lose authority over animals and through courage they use weapons or different methods to try to control and can eventually kill the animals. This cause is the most common and often out different news every day about the lack of authority that people have about their pets or their neighbors pets. “Abbotsford Resident concerned after her cat also shot with a pellet gun” Judd writes, “A person in the neighborhood is shooting cats with a gun. Days later her cat was shoot, she said would the person actually do this to a pet do that to a person”. The author’s point is no one can shot animals for scare them.

Animal cruelty is becoming an issue that is too big to ignore. It can be defined as neglect or the infliction of pain or suffering towards animals. One might notice that this is an issue that is becoming more common in zoos and aquariums. These places can be wonderful for the animals, but can also portray an awful life for the captive animals. No animal should have to go through the pain and stress that many are suffering through.

At one point in your life, have you ever thought to yourself how was the meat on your plate produced, and why is it so cheap? Billions of farm animals are consumed every year in the U.S. at cheap costs and endure in conditions that buyers wouldn’t acknowledge. A large portion of our meats originate from meat industries that produce, abuse, and process meat for the public from farms that abuse animals unless the animal was raised organically. The meats that are produced are a necessity for a us omnivores because we eat meat on a daily basis as a source for protein and fat, unless you are vegetarian, or vegan. Now since it’s a necessity for us living beings, is cruelty in animal agriculture worth the outcome for better for our economy?
