Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He maintained the Union during the U.S. Civil War and brought about the emancipation of slaves. He was one of America’s most admired presidents. Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He was named after his paternal grandfather. He had a rough childhood. His father, Thomas Lincoln was a very strong and an insistent pioneer and he also was respected in the community. Abraham Lincoln's parents had two other children, Sarah was Abraham's older sister and Thomas was his younger brother, but he died in infancy. It is a disease you get from drinking the milk of cows which had grazed on poisonous white snakeroot. On December 2nd, 1819, Abraham's father, marries a widow, Sarah Bush Johnston, and becomes stepfather to her three children. Abraham grows much affection for his stepmother. Abraham briefly attended school. He spent less than 12 months going to school, and he didn't attend college at all. As Abraham grew up, he loved to read and liked learning than working in the fields. He had a difficult relationship with his father because of this his father was just the opposite of him. Abraham was always borrowing books from the neighbors. On January 20th, 1828, his married sister, Sarah, dies while giving birth. In April, Abraham who is 19 years old now and Allen Gentry take a flatboat containing a cargo of farm produce to New Orleans. During the trip they fight with seven black men for a robbery attack. In 1831, Abraham makes a second flatboat trip to New Orleans. His father moves again, but he doesn’t go with him and he lives in New Salem, Illinois. He was an enlisted man in the Black Hawk War. He made an unsuccessful run for the Illinois legislature in 1832. He serves three months but does not fight in a battle at all. On August 6th, 1832, he loses the election for General Assembly. The small village store Abraham worked in losses its business. Abraham and his partner, William Berry, buy another village store in New Salem. Sadly, the new store fails and Abraham is put in dept. On August 4th, 1834, He was 24 years old and he is elected to the Illinois General Assembly as a member of the Whig Party. He begins to study law. In December, 1834 he first meets Stephen A. Douglas, who is a Democrat. His store partner William Berry dies in January 1835, this increases Lincoln's debt to $1,000.In 1836 he is re-elected to the General Assembly and by now he is a leader of the Whig Party. He received his license to practice Law and he begins his courtship of Mary Owens. On April 15th, 1837, he leaves New Salem and lives in Springfield. Lincoln proposes to Mary Owens and she lets him down and his courtship ends. On August 6th, 1838 he is re-elected to the Illinois General Assembly, and he became Whig Floor
