I interviewed Aaron Nemec, the Executive Vice President at Academy Mortgage Company. By meeting with him and discussing his role within the company, how he feels about leadership, what it should be like, as well as his experiences within the company, I was able to gain a better understanding of what it means to lead (or manage). In his opinion, the role of the leader/manager is most simply to set the strategy for the company in terms of production units. This is comprised of delegating tasks and assignments to employees, ensuring they stay on track, and offering support or, when needed, reprimanding employees. There are a lot more owners to comply with regulatory requirements. In addition, the mortgage company has grown steadily over the years and competitive challenges are constant. As a result of more competition, company margins have tightened, resulting in revenue pressure. Trying to hold the price at the same point is more difficult as competitors try to drive it down. As far as personal challenges go, the large amounts of travel required with the job have made it much more stressful. It is important to Aaron that leaders, including himself, are servant leaders meaning you serve those who work under you. He also believes it is important to lead by example. By working as a competent manager and doing his job well, he can expect similar work ethic from those around him. Significantly, he mentions that a leader should never ask someone to do something they wouldn’t do themselves. Whether it is something morally wrong or work that isn’t possible to finish within a certain period, it is irresponsible of a manager to treat employees in such a manner. Lastly, it is important to listen more than you talk. It is impossible to understand problems that arise in the company through talking, similarly, you will better understand employees by listening to
