Abstract
How can you take a leadership role without being a leader? This paper will tell you as a nurse, or as any part of the staff, how to take a leadership position by being actively involved in teamwork. You can choose to be part of the negative or positive sides of leading your coworkers to better ways when it comes to problematic situations or by simply wanting to approach your supervisor or manager with issues that should be addressed to better change things. When there is a situation, you should not put in negative feedback or complain like some of your fellow coworkers might be doing. Instead, encourage a positive movement out of the negative situation. Sit down with them and say, “How can we improve the situation to prevent any further occurrences?”. Gather information to get a better view on it and ask others to share their primary concerns. Together, you can all work as a team and formulate a plan which can later be addressed to the charge nurse, nurse manager, etc. You can be the difference in your work place by influencing others and encouraging them to work as a team and connect information with each other about patient care, patient status, errors that have occurred and how to prevent them, etc. Once your team has established sufficient ideas and information to better handle things and prevent reoccurrences, these ideas can be presented to a higher power than yourselves. You do not have to have a title of hierarchy to be able to make change for the better. A negative situation can always be multiplied into various positives. You just have to handle the matter correctly. Encourage everyone to express their opinions and give feedback on the situations that occur. Never make anyone feel unimportant when they are expressing feedback or opinions and always acknowledge the suggestions that are made. That one …show more content…

(IHI PS 106, Lesson 2, Page 7) Psychological safety would indicate things such as you asking for help without feeling that others will think any different about you. This could be as simple as you needing to ask for help administering an injection because you have not done it before in the actually nursing field. Active leadership includes sharing information with other, inviting others to share information of past experiences or opinions, and to set real life expectations. This would be that you are able to not have any fear of speaking up when you know something is incorrect in a situation such as in regards to a patients medication regimen during hospital stay. Transparency is giving the correct attention to issues that have occurred and not ignoring them and putting them on the back burner. You are able to share information regarding the errors to avoid future mistakes from occurring. Fairness, which I feel is a very important aspect in any field, is characterized by people being held responsible for their actions and mistakes without being reprimanded or scared of termination. Employees will not be afraid of being punished because of their mistake and instead, are taught to prevent future errors and guided in a correct path of
