Succeeding the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was a time period in Europe of cultural and artistic advancements that changed the course of history, leading to the Modern Era. (Source 1) Through the Renaissance, ideas of humanism spread all throughout Europe. Humanism is a system of thought based on human individualism and self-worth that was greatly emphasized during this time period. People were expected to become active in public affairs such as literature, politics, and the arts. (Source 1)
In the time of the Middle Ages, they focused on the religious value of art, “The [clearest] evidence of the break with medieval culture comes from the visual arts.” (DocA) a popular painting of this time by Duccio Di Bouninsegna’s shows The Mother Mary with the baby Jesus on her lap. This painting was two-dimensional and had very little creativity, the painting mostly didn’t make people feel anything only had religious value. While during the Renaissance they focused on making you feel stronger feelings “[It] was the essence of the Renaissance .... One begins to know the names of the artists ... feel stronger emotions in the subjects ... ... see well-defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery, and three-dimensional figures” (Doc A).
People have told stories with marble, as well as ink. The focus of the Renaissance was the arts. Artists had evolved their skillsets since the Middle Ages, for example, their paintings weren’t 2D and they focused on people rather than just gods. The detail of sculptures and paintings became more realistic than it had been during the Middle Ages. In Michelangelo's sculpture David completed in 1504, he sculpted an image of David from David and Goliath holding a slingshot, before he kills the beast with a stone.
Education During the Renaissance DBQ During the Renaissance, education was used to study philosophy and to enlighten oneself with the ancient civilizations, but over time it became to be increasingly challenged and twisted. These ideas eventually were viewed to some people as a waste of time. There was greater criticism for education and there was a need for more workers instead of the humanist philosophers. Renaissance education stressed the need to study philosophy.
The Black Death During the fourteenth century many things began to change such as medieval, renaissance, and late gothic art styles began to exist. During this time period not only did the art change but the music also changed because music began to get a lot darker and not as uplifting as it used to be. Many different types of art and music started to become very different when something very bad happened which was the Black Death.
Journal Entry 10 If three events have to rank according to their influence on the course of western civilization than, the Age of the Renaissance would be undoubtedly come first in rank. The Renaissance was the period of new movement following the long and dark period of history. This period witnesses the great amount changes, were invention and innovation start beginning in advance level. During the Renaissance movement, the establishment and changes on culture, political, ideas, education, and art were greatly influenced, which provided many of permanent scholars and thinkers of all time.
The new Enlightenment era had on impact on the arts and music and its style. The artwork during this time went from very soft pastel paintings of the rich who wasted their life away doing nothing, to contrast dark paintings of intellectual scenes that encouraged education to the people. The artists of the era started to focus on poverty and peasants yet still painted them with joy. They showed through their art that one did not have to be rich or have nice things to have a fulfilled happy life. There was also a change in the music of the time and its availability because it had to keep up with the changed time.
How humanism affected the Renaissance and Reformation The Renaissance was a big change in European society. It reintroduced classical culture and brought back their style of art and architecture. In addition, classical culture also established a new way of thinking; humanism. This unique style changed learning, art, science and politics for the better.

Firstly, I choose the Renaissance of music which occurred between 1450 and the 1600th. During this time period there were great developments in technology, art, and most importantly music. During this time period a printing mechanism was invented and music was able to reach places it couldn’t reach before. As a result, the music influenced a lot of people. Bringing forth new composers and musicians during this time period.
During the middle ages there were many periods of art styles that existed, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic. The art style which I prefer is the Gothic style, the gothic period is more colorful and creative type of style. While the Byzantine and Romanesque were focused more on architecture and a bit unrealistic and gothic was more realistic and dimensional. Gothic is my preference because I enjoy the use of bright colors and unique pieces like the stained glass that were used as a replacement for windows in churches.
During the Middle Ages, there was a lot of turmoil and changes from the fall of the Roman Empire, migrations, disease, wars and large divisions of social classes. The Middle Ages spanned a long time period from about 450 to 1450. During this period music was mostly associated with religion and the Gregorian Chant was commonly used to enhance church services. Also, many musicians during this period were priests and music was not notated for the most part during this time.
Directly following the Middle Ages came a time we have come to call the Renaissance. This was a time of rebirth, renewal, regeneration, and rejuvenation throughout the world, especially in Western Europe, where expanding trade brought news goods and, with them, new light to culture. It was a time where humanistic and philosophical ideas could flourish and be explored. Rather than focusing on the afterlife, the focus shifted to this life, the here and now, tour worldly realities. The individual became more important and there was a huge focus on learning the Classics, such as the Iliad and Odyssey, to inspire the arts.
Art during the renaissance During the Renaissance, there was a lot of artworks and creations. The art varied from paintings to sculptures. some of the famous artists during this time were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello. These artists have created amazing works and have more than likely inspired many artists around the world today. These artists have created a huge impact on the importance of art along with giving more of a historic background.
The renaissance was a time of many different improvements and changes to the era previous to it, the medieval ages, the renaissance re-introduced many different Roman and Greek traditional aspects, so much so that renaissance literally translates into “rebirth” in French. Other changes include social such as the rise of humanism and humanist beliefs, secularism, individualism, big changes in mathematical studies, sciences and all types of learning in general, the printing press invention, as well as religious changes, and the arts were also affected and changed with techniques such as chiaro-scuro, perspective, sfumato, and further more to be explained.
