Most teachers sooner or later during in their teaching career will have to teach one-to-one classes and this type of teaching style is entitled to many disadvantages as well as advantages. One-to-one classes are made unique and different as compared to teaching groups because one-to-one classes require teachers to develop their own strategies, approaches, and materials. In this essay, I will discuss about the problems that may encounter from one-to-one classes and ways that I (as a teacher) would overcome it and alongside that are disadvantages of this teaching style. The first advantage of the one-to-one teaching style would be that the learner has all of the teacher’s attention as compared to the divided attention in bigger group lessons. This means that the student will have more opportunity to engage in real communication and receive clearer feedback and allows the teacher to have a better understanding of the learner’s needs. Secondly, the teacher does not need to take into account the problems that larger groups may face such as such as mixed ability and group dynamics etc. Thirdly, the learner generally has more control over the aims of the class, the pace, and the materials. Another advantage of the one-to-one lesson is that it is not focused on “time” so they can go at their own pace and not feel pressured by the progress of other students. In addition to that, their strengths and weaknesses are taken into account more quickly and students are not in competition with other students for the teacher’s time. There are so much more advantages to this teaching style and I believe it can override the disadvantages of the one-of-one
