Theoretical Framework This qualitative study determines African American students’ sense of belonging at a Hispanic-serving institution in Houston, Texas. Some methods of data collection that are utilized in this study are focus groups and interviews. These methods allow the researcher to gather organic responses from students lived experiences which help the researcher better understand African American students’ sense of belonging. Secondary/existing data such as official and personal documents are also utilized to determine what programs and initiatives were put in place to increase students’ sense of belonging and to determine how these programs and initiatives have changed over the years. Another principle is fostering engagement where instructors encourage students to identify things they are passionate about learning. The next principle is the importance of self-evaluation where educators minimize the implementation of tests and grades and instead allow students to self-evaluate so that they can determine their own progress. The theorists believed that a student’s ability to learn is connected to the fulfillment or satisfaction of other needs similar to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which is a model the humanistic learning theory supports and builds off of. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory that demonstrates the needs of humans. The model is in the shape of a pyramid where physiological needs such as food, water, rest, and breathing are at the bottom. Next, is safety needs where the focus is on items such as social ability and security. Then, love and belonging needs where friendship and the sense of connection is crucial. Self-esteem is next where confidence and achievement come into play. Finally, self-actualization is at the top of the pyramid where morality, purpose, and potential play a major role.
