Animal testing within the cosmetic industry is a highly controversial topic in our society today. The process of animal testing balances greatly on the line between ethics and economics. The economic “asset” that comes along with animal testing is appealing to many businesses that are looking to enhance and evaluate their products. However, some companies have forfeited the “advantages” that animal testing provides, and have chosen to act through a more ethical lense: one that has abolished animal testing. (Ethics- Jacqueline Fernandez Launches: The Body Shop’s Campaign Against Animal Testing, 2017) This campaign holds extreme significance within the cosmetic industry, due to how 80 percent of the industry still uses animal testing today (Cruelty Free International Launches Campaign at The Body Shop, 2012). “People are confused about animal testing. The world over, people want this cruel practice to end, yet existing laws are a patchwork of different rules with some very big gaps,” said Michelle Thew. Many companies seem open to the idea of disposing animal testing, but it requires activism and effort for this task to occur in reality. However, The Body Shop has already taken the initiative to halt this process, as well as expanding their campaign by reaching out and partnering with other individuals, one of them being actress Jacqueline Fernandez. Fernandez has partnered in The Body Shop’s endeavour to globally ban all animal testing by the year of 2020.
