Helen Keller once stated, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of the trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved” (Helen Keller Quotes). In the novel Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, the author visualizes Louie Zamperini’s experiences in the war and what he does to diminish the obstacles that faced him. Through Louie’s conflicts he builds his character from the atrocities he endured. In doing so he grows and develops as a person and learns the value of life.
Therefore when the author tells us this will bring us together, it is meant to stir patriotic feelings within the reader. In the next paragraph, the author uses logic. This is evident when the author asks the readers this: "As Americans, we all share in our freedoms. Isn’t it only just that we all shoulder the obligations to uphold those freedoms?"
The Gilded Ones, by Namina Forna, is a fictional book about a girl named Deka, she was born with darker skin and impure blood, but in her village impure blood was not allowed, so she was beheaded by her father and became a demon. There can be some parallels drawn between the real world and The Gilded Ones. In the book, the characters face real world challenges and learn how to overcome them throughout the book. A parallel in the book is page 149, of the book it states “Our whole lives we’ve been taught to make ourselves smaller, weaker than men”. We cannot think of uniting with others until after we have first united among ourselves. " This means that we can’t come together with white people until blacks come together in one part of the world and build our own things so we have something we own for ourselves. We can’t think of coming together with others first, we must unite among our own race. Now this is something that I would have to agree to disagree with only because, if we were to completely segregate ourselves from other races then it would be even harder to come together as a human species later down the line. As a result of us segregating, life wouldn’t be the same if out of nowhere people just randomly tried to come together and change a key factor of how the world was established, it wouldn’t work.
