Because Margot’s peers have only seen rain their entire lives, they do not understand the sun in the same way Margot does. In “All Summer in a Day” we learn that we should not mistreat others because of the way they think, look, or act — doing so causes hurt or bitterness.
A large portion of this quarter centered on the analysis of theme and writer’s craft. The reading and writing connection allowed students the opportunity to look closely at an author’s writing and speculate about possible themes. We used the short story, All Summer in a Day, by Ray Bradbury as a model of how to write a thematic essay. Students wrote a thematic essay about a book of their own choosing following the procedures presented. The thematic essays went through a process of focused mini lessons, individual and small group conferencing, independent and peer revisions.
She is waiting patiently for the sun to make an appearance when it has been constantly raining for the last seven years.
