As stated in the previous chapter connection, there are many challenges that stand in the way of urban education. The main issue discussed in chapter 10 of the book “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education” by Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode, was the issue of bilingual programs never having enough support by schools. In addition “bilingual teachers have been segregated programmatically and physically from other staff members, making both teachers and students feel isolated from the community (p.380)”. Aashiq Jivani - Stanford Law School Diversity Statement Whereas most of the students of Stanford Law School hail from families with decorated educational backgrounds, I am one of the eleven-thousand first-generation students currently enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). While obtaining a degree as a first-generation student is undoubtedly an impressive achievement, the campaign to do so does not come without its own set of challenges. First-generation students are not exposed to any parental advice on how to navigate through the unanticipated academic, social, and emotional trials that they encounter in college. As a result, these students are thirty-five percent less likely to graduate than continuing-generation students.

Our actions and attitude can make America the great country it one was, so that all of our diversity that makes up our country is accepted. Our country was based on “the melting pot.” Also our country was compared as “the heirs of all time.”
Imagine you won the lottery. You would presumably feel cheerful and excited, right? Now imagine the prize of winning is to be the sacrificial lamb of a ritual. How would you feel knowing this piece of information? Would you still have participated in the first place?
Over the past years, America has had many immigrants come from all over the world to become American citizens, which allowed America to become a diverse country. The different cultures, languages, and the races make America the melting pot. While some people believe America embracing diversity creates unity, it can be argued that America is moving toward a new standard in which diversity and individuality are encouraged more than uniformity and conformity because people are being taught different languages and some people combine or teach others their culture. Children all over the country are being taught many different languages. Learning different languages is important because our country is more diverse than others.

The organization I work for, Starbucks is highly diversified. In my opinion, Starbucks successfully employs each of the seven diversity components: “authentic leadership commitment, clear organizational communication, inclusive recruitment practices, long-term retention strategies, incorporating diversity into main work of the organization, diversity management metrics, and expansive external relationships” (CanÌas, Sondak 2014). With that being said, Starbucks could improve by incorporating diversity into main work of the organization. One way Starbucks proves their commitment to diversity is authentic by holding a diverse board of directors. Of the seven board members, three are women and one of these women is of an African descent.
