Jim Brown. Oprah. Liz Murray. Craig Thornton. Beyonce. Stevie Wonder. This list may be only names, only letters to some people. But they have all exercised one of America’s greatest gifts to our generation. Freedom. These people stood up for what they believe in, and have fought for what they think is right. They have used their freedom to stand up for themselves and others. Their voices have been heard. They have demonstrated to young people everywhere that it’s ok to go against the current for what they believe. These athletes, actors, artists, and social media influencers are an example to my generation of America’s greatest gift to our generation, the freedom to stand up for what we believe in. This freedom can be traced back to 1971 when the Bill of Rights, containing the first 10 amendments, became part of the constitution. This is the greatest gift given to our nation’s millennials; when James Madison wrote the document stating our freedoms as citizens of America . The First Amendment states our right to freedom of speech, press, religion, and our rights to peacefully assemble. This part of the Bill of Rights alone can set us free. This generation is often called many things; social media obsessed, relaxed, disrespectful, but I believe we are and can be a generation of freedom fighters. Many have used the gift of freedom to stand up for their beliefs, and have used it to fight for a cause bigger than themselves in many situations.
