I read "Beyond the Bubble Test: Why We Need Performance Assessments" by Matthew Lynch. In this article, the author discusses the current policy in the USA and compares it with a case in an institution in which performance based assessment is used. Among other things, Lynch points out to the fact that high stakes tests that are machine scored are not preparing students to meet the challenges of their future careers and the real world. Besides that, he argues, the system is not measuring or encouraging “learning ability” and teachers feel like they are teaching the test instead of getting students involved in more real life tasks. I completely agree with the author that performance based tests are necessary once they focus on developing learning
