PBA allows educators to be able to freely educate their students in a way that doesn’t burden them with unnecessary information.
It creates an obsession with test scores as a chief “accountably” metric for students, educators and schools. This system has led to the exams becoming an end instead of a means to an end. You cannot expect an athlete to perform like a world-class player when they are receiving the complete opposite of world-class training, so why would we expect a future professional to build their knowledge when all they are doing in class is testing? The Controversy of Standardized Testing Students everywhere take standardized tests. However, are they truly beneficial to the students? Are these tests capable of showing what students can really do? Or, are they biased against the test-taker, making it harder to reach his or her goals? With the No Child Left Behind Act coming into play through 2015, now called The Every Student Succeeds Act, standardized testing became the center of students' lives. From the time they were in elementary school taking those exams, to high school, where these tests can determine their future, students never catch a break. Everybody tests differently, not everyone deals well under the pressure of a timed exam, creating unreliable data. “Standardized tests inadvertently create incentives for students to become superficial thinkers” (Harris 3).
If all we do is get students ready to take tests they will not be ready for the real world. Teachers shouldn't be rewarded or punished for this because it isn't a precise way to measure their skill. The tests which cost billions of dollars are famous for making big time consuming errors. NCS Pearson, which has a $254 million contract to administer Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test, delivered the 2010 results more than a month late and their accuracy was challenged by over half the state's superintendents(Valerie Strauss, "New Test Scoring Problems for Pearson,” Washington Post, July 19, 2010).
On top of these issues, standardized testing causes harmful effects to students self-esteem, which not only damages their self-efficacy for future success, but can cause them to underperform while taking these high-stakes tests. Even if standardized tests do provide some helpful feedback or comparison, tests that affect student behavior in this way and negatively impact teaching and curriculum should not be used as a critical academic assessment. James Popham summarizes, “But to evaluate educational quality by using the wrong assessment instruments is a subversion of good sense. Although educators need to produce valid evidence regarding their effectiveness, standardized achievement tests are the wrong tools for the task”
