Poetry can be described as “a thought in the act of dawning” or as the brightness of the sunlight of the sun. While similar to other forms of literature, poetry seeks to tell a story. It is a writer’s unique way of providing insight into the window of the mind. It captures the essence of the heart, soul, and the mind. A rap song is not poetry, although others seem to think it is. A good poem captures the sounds of word, textures and meanings. With poetic words, various emotions are on display. When you add music, they becomes a song and songs have meaning. Certain elements as allegory, anecdote and conflict are usually present. Whatever devices are present, it is important that a meaning be derived from the words. An example of a song that could be a poem is Just My Imagination by The Temptations. There is allusion and alliteration throughout each stanza. The lines between what is a song and what is a poem are often blurred. Songs do not hold much value as they once did, nor do people try to get the meaning of the song. Lyrics like poems gain their support from certain words and focus on use of good vocabulary. When a writer pens a song, they rely what words they choose to convey a particular message to the listener. What words they choose to use, could make a song memorable or forgettable.
