Throughout this article, Dimitriu reiterates the relationship between sleep and mental health and how it is “bidirectional” meaning that they influence each other. The effect is that lack of sleep or poor sleep quality can contribute to the development or even the exacerbation of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorders, and schizophrenia. If asked how is a person’s lifetime spent, numerous people would think of the times devoted to family. They may reflect of the years of gaining an education, or attempting to find a soulmate to spend the rest of their life with. However, we rarely consider the time we spend preparing our body to continue living our lives. Oddly enough, the time we allow our body to recuperate, through sleeping, is where we spend more than a third of our lifetime; this is equivalent to approximately twenty five years cycling through the stages of sleep, yet at some point in time we all have been deprived of some essential hours of shut eye (Altevogt and Harvey). Alcoholism is a common problem in United States, and an estimated 15%-20% of hospitalized patients are dependent on alcohol. These hospitalized patients are suddenly force to stop drinking, which placed them at a risk for alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). AWS complicates these patients’ treatment and recovery and sometimes causes death (Lussier-Cushing et al., 2007). Regular and excessive use of alcohol leads to tolerance and dependence.

The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.

The darkness of night unveils the hidden cove of possibilities that awaits us in sleep. For some, sleep provides the much needed distraction and replenishment needed to perform our daily routines. As we curl up under the security of our favorite blanket, snuggle against the fluffiness that is our pillow, and as we slowly begin to shut our eyes, we succumb to the beauty that is sleep. So, we called this situation as sleep deprivation which means a condition where people not get enough sleep. We are in the same shoes, so no worries. A research from Brown University stated that, from a survey they conducted to a group of college student, 11% student have a good sleep but the rest which is 73% from the same study were found to have a sleep problem.
