Enter Bob Heil, a resident of California. He is intrigued by actions, both politically and environmentally. Heil finds interest in learning new things about the world where the government and nature meet, creating new opportunities for volunteers, politicians, and environmentalists alike. Heil also notices the “ground troops” in most nature-based charities and how they are constantly striving and helping to make a difference in both the United States’ wilderness and government (Heil). Heil hopes to encourage more and more environmental clubs to be involved politically and make a difference.
Living in a border town in Deep South Texas, I was unable to truly appreciate the fauna and flora of the Rio Grande Valley, but after my internship, I learned the importance of knowing the environment of my own habitat. As a Wildlife and Fisheries Science major, I am required to take an internship in my respective field. After seeking an internship, the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge in Alamo, Texas, my hometown, granted me the opportunity to become an intern at their site for the duration of the summer of 2012. During my time there, I was able to assist in many research projects and help in the everyday tasks that needed to get done to run the wildlife refuge effectively.
Living in a city leaves us with a paradoxical union of an ability to lighten our footprint on the environment, but at the cost of treading in an already massive crater of ecological destruction. These cities were once habitats to flora and fauna that had adapted to this environment and flourished, but were cut down in droves due to the stark modernization of humanity. Many have watched this occur and only very recently in our history have few began to act. A local chapter of such activists appear in the Kansas City Metropolitan Region in the form of the KC WildLands Project. Their mission statement is, “Kansas City WildLands is a coalition of resource professionals, private conservation organizations and conservation-minded citizens established to restore and conserve the remnants of Kansas City’s original landscape by involving people in the stewardship of the land” (Bridging the Gap).
Lastly, my community experiences of volunteer experiences for over 100 hours, and working with diverse population, was very rewarding. The volunteer time spent in the community helped
Conservation education is the process of delivering knowledge to people about environmental issues and conservation efforts. This is done through zoo teachers and education officers who use a variety of techniques, methods and assessments to influence people’s attitudes, emotions and behaviours (“Conservation Education | International Zoo Educators Association”, n.d.). Another ecosystem approach is how Zoos Victoria provides teachers with resources such as teacher campaign packs. Teachers can use those packs to guide students through a curriculum linking to the community’s conservation campaigns. This curriculum helps students to view questions that investigate wildlife conservation issues and commit to actions that will protect animals in the wild (“Teacher resources.
Additionally, I offer a unique invasion ecology perspective, particularly as it relates to biodiversity and conservation issues. It is my goal to prepare students (whether they pursue careers in the sciences or other disciplines) to evaluate and test hypotheses, to reason quantitatively, to communicate effectively, to appreciate the diversity of perspectives and motives surrounding complex problems, and to become citizens capable of informed decision-making on local and global environmental issues. George Mason University is located in close proximity to a number of natural areas (Rock Creek Park, SERC, various branches of UMCES, Wye Island National Resource Management Area, Chesapeake Bay), which would allow me to incorporate field activities in a range of urban, rural and natural settings within easy reach of campus. The university’s proximity to government agencies that deal with environmental science (EPA, USGS, NOAA, USDA) would also provide abundant opportunities to enrich my classes with speakers who conduct or apply environmental research in their careers. I also plan to incorporate my research results into lectures and class activities in order to give students a chance to work with real
Not only do we need to raise awareness for the national and state parks, but we also need to raise funding. Richard J. Ansson Jr. in association with the Fordham Environmental Law Journal reiterates the need for funding by reminding the reader of the National Park Service's purpose: “to protect and preserve scenic, natural and historical resources for the enjoyment by present and future generations” (Ansson 6). By supporting the NPS in their efforts to protect the land, you
Investing in the National Park Service should be a priority in our nation because national parks are educational for Americans and inhabited by plant and animal species. Nowadays, finding a place that
The love and care of animals has become common plan in households and families. The types of animals range from dogs and cats to birds and fish. Some people have gerbils, hamsters and even ferrets. At some point in time these animals will require medical attention which is provided for by veterinarians. This research paper will examine three different types of veterinary management software to better help the customers and analyze the way veterinary technicians interact with clients.
Entering into a course pertaining to wildlife biology stems from my long term interest in all different types of animals and preserving them for future generations. I want to make an impact on the world through wildlife conservation; a fire has been ignited in me ever since our president, Donald Trump, and Congress have rescinded multiple regulations such as the limited hunting of bears and wolves on wildlife refuges. Recently, the size of national monuments have been shrunk and the danger of climate change is consistently being ignored. By enrolling in this course and eventually graduating, my aspirations to contribute to the earth and its animal inhabitants will finally become possible from when I was in grade school. The reason why I, an American student, am looking to study in the United Kingdom is largely due to the allure of the subjects taught within the wildlife biology course.
The internship required me to compile and analyze data generated by other researchers. I spent most of my time working and talking with people who worked in other parts of the lab, and I became more appreciative of the benefits of collaboration. The experience also helped cement my decision to pursue a biomedical engineering degree.
I have always loved nature and wanted to somehow be involved with natural resources. As soon as I learned that Iowa State had an NREM program (the only one in the state of Iowa), I was eager to start my journey. Iowa State has held multiple opportunities for me to visit national parks one including Yellowstone, but I didn’t have the funds. However, I think those opportunities are what shape the students in the NREM department. My time at Iowa State aided my understanding of natural resources, it’s “founding fathers”, and has helped me determine where I need to be in
Imagine being crammed into a small bedroom with 19 other people. That 's the way Belle, a black Shepard mix from Alabama felt. She stayed in a small dog shelter in Lawrence county, crowded with 300 other homeless dogs waiting for someone to take them in. One couple eventually did adopt her, but soon after realized they were not equipped to take care of her. After the unsuccessful adoption, Belle and a few hundred more animals were taken in from the shelter.
Nature helped a troubled student realize his passion for the environment. He joined the eco club to avoid detention and later realized he enjoyed nature after planting a jalapeno chili plant and going on a field trip. Now, he is currently, “An Environmentalist and head of the Natural Leaders Network, which is part of the Children & Nature Network. He is also a National Geographic explorer and has spoken at the White House twice.” (Brian Clark Howard).
My internship was with the Boys and Girls Club LeBron James Clubhouse. I worked with students from the Akron area that were in less than ideal home situations and I saw a huge need for a positive role model in their life that was dedicated to working towards helping them succeed and advocating for them and their needs. It was after my experiences at the Boys and Girls Club that I decided my next step would be to follow in my mother’s footsteps and become a school
